Room Design Research

I’ve drawn up the layout of my room and I now have a room set up I want to go with, but since this is a design based project I’m now looking into how the room will look and what different features such as the bed, bath, chairs and shower will look like. I want a clean modern feel that is warm and welcoming, this is what I’ve chosen to go for neutral colours such as cream and white with some wood as well. Below are a few ideas for the different aspects of the room and when I manage to scan in my layout I will.

I’m having a small seating area that I’m separating from the bedroom, this can be used for meetings and with it being separate from the bed it will seem formal and comfortable. I have looked at a few chair designs and decided I want something similar to the two chairs below.

For the bed I want a small amount of wood and possibly bedside tables that are built into the bed or attached to the wall similar to how the desk area will look. I like the design of the room below and I’m going to take quite a lot of inspiration from it when creating my hotel room design, along with the bed below as well.

For the bathroom I want quite a bit of wood and modern features, below are a few images for reference when creating my bathroom design.

Hotel Research

I’ve been researching hotel features and ways I can be innovative. I think technology is a massive part of the future so a futuristic hotel room needs to be technologically advanced. For my room design for IHG I’m creating an executive room for the Crowne Plaza hotels, these hotels are mainly city based and regularly used by business professionals along with people visiting the cities for a short stay. The rooms need to be comfortable and stylish and provide each guest the the services they desire. The room will be controlled via a control system, I’ve found that Phillips have a great system for hotel rooms that has great features for the guests as well as the staff working in the hotel and it is energy efficient. I’m also including voice controls for the room lighting, TV, blinds and air conditioning. Voice control is becoming widely used in homes and cars, it is useful for busy people along with blind people. Voice control in the bathroom can be very useful for adjusting the shower, bath or lighting controls as wet hands dont mix well with technology and if the guests need glasses they wont be wearing them in the shower and may not be able to see well to manually control the settings. I have read articles about future hotel rooms that have helped me decide how I want to room to work but the design of the room I’m still figuring out what will work best.

Finger print recoginition controls for entering the room and for the safe are a very secure idea for a modern hotel, the hotel in the above link has a safe with finger print recognition. This company provide finger print recognition for access to hotel rooms.

For the design of the room I want something sleek and modern, where things can be hidden so the room looks clean and open. I have noticed hotel rooms arent very large so the ability to store items away to make extra space will be useful. Since speaking to Roma I have been contemplating having a way of hiding the bed from the room, this could be useful for business professionals who need meeting space whilst travelling as the room will look like a meeting room and it will give more space and appear more professional without a bed in. Since the hotel room I’m creating will be aimed at the business traveller I want to make sure the room provides them with everything they need as well as being somewhere comfortable to work in, meet in and relax in after a long day of meetings. The bathroom will have a large relaxing jacuzzi bath for relaxing in and a shower for ease of use in the morning. Along with twin sinks and a separate toilet, this is great if the room is being shared for the stay so the guests have extra space. To give the room a warm feel I have considering using wood effect along with neutral cream colours in the bathroom and bedroom, I will also add small amounts of colour. Too much colour or a lot of one colour can be off putting in a room and neutral colours will please all guests tastes. I have also considered making a seating area that is separate to the bed, so it feels less like a bedroom and can be used for meetings with clients and colleagues. I am taking design inspiration from the images on my previous post about my client project. Along with the images below.

Little update

I’ve been busy reading and writing away for the research project and I’ve not had much to upload. I’ve created a little image today and I think it looks pretty good so I wanted to upload it, I created it to add in for the context assignment.

I’ve just completed the research document and uploaded it to the drop box. I found my topic really interesting and I’m looking forward to learning new skills and creating my artefacts. I have written about the techniques used to make digital FX integrate realistically and effectively with live footage. For the artefacts I’m hoping to create a little bit of digital FX using a green screen and possibly the motion tracking software the university has.

Futuristic hotel room

I’ve been researching for the competition brief for my client project. I’ve looked at hotel rooms that already exist as well a modern technology and houses of the future to get ideas together for the look and feel of the hotel room and what technology should be used. A while ago on the gadget show they visited a futuristic hotel room and then created their own hotel rooms with modern technology in and they also have a list of the . The hotel visited on the gadget show was one in Germany that includes a rocking bed, sensors for lighting, a window that can be used as a screen and a bathroom with sauna features. It looks curvy, sleek and rather white with wood in the bathroom and the lighting comes in a variety of colours to suit the guests tastes (images below).

The hotel in Vegas has some great technology in for guests including customisable room settings, high speed internet and the ability for the room to “greet” the guest as they enter the room with lighting, music and heating. I’d like to take these features into the room I’m going to create, although I’d want to change the look of the room, maybe more combine it with the look of the German hotel room to create something comfortable but modern with great usability.

I read from a frequent hotel user with some great ideas I want to use for the room such as voice control, free WiFi and room keys sent to your smart phone.

From this I have decided my room will be controlled by a touch screen tablet which will be able to be used for the lighting, blinds, audio, TV, heating, room service, and wake up calls. There will of course be wi-fi in the room as the demand for the internet is very high, there will also be a large flat screen TV that guests can plug their own devices into such as laptops, cameras, MP3 players etc. Each room should be equipped with a blue ray player and television channels. From the german future hotel room I like the idea of sensors in the floor for bringing on the lighting at night and the bathroom come sauna is a great idea but the rocking bed and the overall look of the room I’m not so sure about in the room I wish to create a more comfortable space and a rocking bed may just make me travel sick rather than send me to sleep. I also want to have an automatic check in system that links with the customers smart phone and sends them their room key as they enter the hotel. Looks wise I’ve found some images for reference below. I now need to look into making the hotel room energy efficient as asked in the brief and within the max 2 minutes presentation I will be handing in I can comment on all the features of the room and it’s greeness as well.

Finding a client…

Well I had a client lined up for my project this year until recently when the main share holder decided to sell the shares to another person who then fired the manager of the company and took the company under his own direction. Since then I’ve been looking around but it seems not many people want, need or even know what I’m on about when I ask if they want any work doing. Roma sent out a couple of emails with competitions links in and I decided to take a look and see if any would be good to used for my client brief. There’s one brief that has interested me and means I will be visualising a hotel room for the future. I will be creating a futuristic room with modern features, I will be looking into technology and green energy to propose ideas for the hotel company and I will showcase my ideas and the layout and look of the room using a 3D tour. The deadline however for this competition is at the start of March but I will be discussing this idea further with my tutor and deciding whether it is a good brief to use, I’m hoping so as I’d really like to create a modern room visualisation.

Simulated client project

I’ve been busy working on my simulated client project for the nottingham trent university alumni. I’ve decide to create a little mascot that can be used for marketing, I think it could add a nice face to the organisation and will work great in videos for getting donations and for thank you’s to the people who donate. I’m going to make a short thank you animation for the project but he could be used widely across the organisation. I’ve chosen to create a bear like the one you can buy as memorabilia from the university as he is already a little face some people may own. Here’s some image of what I’ve been working on, I have been using the fur material and getting to grips with it and I’m quite happy with the outcome. All I need to do now is animate the thank you and edit it together with an intro and a bit of music.

Research Project

Hello! I am still alive and I’ve been meaning to post for a while. I had a bit of bad luck our first week back and I got the flu so I’ve spent a lot of time recovering in bed but I’ve also been thinking about and researching for my projects. I’m now a little clearer on my research project and hopefully roma likes it as much as I do. I want to look into CGI realism in VFX, advertising, gaming and virtual reality. I’ve looked into hyper reality and I’ve also found a great article in 3D world’s December issue about VFX, they have spoken to industry professionals including Paul Franklin from Double Negative, Guy Williams from Weta Digital and there is also an interview with James Cameron.

Third year has begun!

Well the first week of my third and final year is pretty much over and we have lots of work to do! I’ve been thinking about my projects over summer and I’ve found a client which is hopefully a decent one for my client project. I’ve not got anything specific as of yet for our research project but I have ideas and areas that I find really interesting such as realism and the interactivity that’s being used for games such as the kinect. I feel this could all play a big part in the future and I’m not sure whether it’s a good or bad thing…

I’ll keep this blog updated and discuss all my ideas for our research project and anything interesting I find. I’ve also got a nice idea for the simulated client project we have it’s simple as I’ve only got 3 weeks to complete it in but I think it will be good for advertising what the alumni association is all about.

Summer Work…

I’ve decide one a few things I want to work on over the summer to get some practice and improve my skills, as well as trying to find a client for my 3rd year project which could be quite difficult and also deciding on what to write about and do artefacts for in my 3rd year as well.

The first thing I’m working on over summer is a bedroom. I’m going to work on my modelling, texturing and lighting skills and 3D visulisation is something I’m really interested in. I’ve started some work on something I created a while ago, I’ve created a vivarium and the mirror so far and I’ve worked on a little lighting for the room and vivarium, I’ve added two lights into the vivarium as it would normally have a spot light and a UV tube, I’ve made the UV tube a long cylinder and I’m rather happy with how the lighting has turned out as I feel it looks rather realistic.

This is before I added some lighting to the room, although I’m tempted to tone down the room lighting a little or make a day and night version of the room for different lighting effects.
